Westfield won for the 2nd time on Sunday when they defeated a scrappy Union team by the score of 13-7. Union stayed with Westfield in the early part of the game and the game remained a 4-4 tie through 3 innings of play, however the Westfield offense would not be suppressed. The bats came alive in the 4th and 5th innings to score an additional 9 runs.
Eric Varakian, Scott Tupper and Chris “Mariano” Varano contributed strong pitching and struck out 7. Tupper got the win and Mariano the save.
Westfield started the scoring in the 1st when Chris Rinaldi doubled to right center. Nick Mele knocked him in with an RBI ground out. They scored 3 times in the 2nd courtesy of an RBI single by Brett Robertshaw and a 2 run single by Scott Tupper. After Union tied the score, Westfield pushed 2 additional runs across in the bottom of the 4th. Matt Macik continued his hot hitting with a double and then Hopper Murray drove in Macik and Chris "Boots" Boutsikaris, who had walked to lead off the inning, with a booming triple to the fence in right field. Murray nearly turned his triple into a home run but he was thrown out on a fairly close play at the plate. Westfield then put the game out of reach when they scored 7 times in the 5th. Mariano and Tupper walked and then the flood gates opened after Union recorded the 2nd out in the inning. With Mariano on 1st and Tupper on 2nd, Varakian, Rinaldi and Mele each followed with singles and then Boots cleared the bases with a grand slam. Difilippo followed with a walk and was immediately singled in by the red hot Macik.
Westfield’s defense continued to sparkle with Ethan Smith making a nice play at 2nd base to record an out on a grounder to short and Murray making a nice catch on a foul ball of off first base. On the final play of the game, Devin Anderson knocked down a hard grounder at 3rd base and alertly tagged the runner approaching 3rd base.
Next up is Branchburg on Monday at 6pm on Gumbert #1 – the boys will wear blue.
