The team continued to shine in all aspects of the game as they defeated Basking Ridge, 15-0, in a mercy rule shortened game.
Hopper Murray, Brett Robertshaw and Ethan Smith shared the pitching duties and recorded a 3 hit shutout.
Murray picked up the victory and Robertshaw and Smith were credited with the save. The trio combined to strike out 4 Basking Ridge batters in 4 innings of play.
The defense was strong and came up with two key double plays to take Basking Ridge out of potential big innings. In the first inning with the bases loaded and one out, shortstop Scott Tupper knocked down a hard smash towards the hole and alertly threw to Ethan Smith at 3rd base. Smith then fired to Chris Varano at 2nd base for the 3rd out. In the 4th inning and runners on first and second base with no outs, second baseman Eric Varakian snared a line drive heading towards center field and quickly threw to first baseman Hopper Murray for the double play. Catcher Devin Anderson recorded the final out of the game in spectacular fashion, lunging forward and making a diving catch on a short pop up in front of home plate.
The offense continued to roll putting up a total of 18 hits in 4 innings. Vin “Madman” Difilippo went 2 for 2 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, Ethan Smith went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Chris Rinaldi had a homer and 4 RBIs, Eric Varakian went 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and Chris “Boots” Boutsikaris, Scott Tupper and Nick Mele each went 2 for 3 with RBIs. Devin Anderson and Chris “Mariano” Varano each had hits and an RBI and Hopper Murray had a clutch hit to right center field in the 7 run 3rd inning.
Next up is the Basking Ridge tournament team in Cranford at 9AM on July 4th. The boys will wear blue and we will arrive at 8:20 for warm ups.
