Westfield remained undefeated in Cranford Tournament by defeating previously undefeated Hazlet by the score of 11-3. Westfield got strong pitching from Vin “Madman” Difilippo who pitched 4 solid innings for the win and from Chris “Boots” Boutsikaris who pitched the final two innings for the save. Madman was well rested coming off of a short vacation and was throwing very hard. He settled down after a Hazlet scored 3 runs in the first inning and pitched 3 consecutive scoreless innings before yielding to Boots who pitched 1 hit ball over the final two innings of play.
The Westfield offense continues to simmer with the team scoring 1 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd and 7 in the 4th. The offense was led by Nick Mele (3 for 3 with a double, a triple and 3 RBIs), Matt Macik (2 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs), Boots (2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs) and Eric Varakian (2 for 3 with an RBI).
Defensively, Westfield played solid behind Difilippo and Boots. Brett Robertshaw and Chris Varano cut down a Hazlet runner trying to stretch a single into a double. Robertshaw was playing center and tracked the ball down at the fence in right center. He fired to Varano who made a great throw to Chris Rinaldi who applied the tag at second. Varakian made a great play at 2nd base on a hard hit ball up the middle. He back handed the ball near 2nd base and turned and fired a strike to Difilippo at first to get the out. Chris Rinaldi made a diving backhand stab of a liner at short and when the umpire ruled the ball was trapped, he fired to Boots at first for the out.
Next up against Union this afternoon at 2:30 (Gumbert #3) – we will wear blue.
