Long Hill on 6/18 (Win 7-1)
Another great win tonight over Long Hill at home at Gumbert 1 to put Westfield Blue at 2 wins and 0 losses. Strong pitching performances from Nick Mele (2 innings and win), Eric Varakian (2 innings), Chris V (1 inning) and Chris R (1 inning and save) shut down the Long Hill offense. Vin Difilippo and Ethan Smith made strong defensive plays to keep the game close in the early going.
The game was close until the bottom of the fourth when Westfield Blue pushed 2 across on a big double by Brett Robertshaw who drove in Mele who had doubled earlier making the score 3-1. Westfield would have scored more runs if it weren't for a great catch by the Long Hill center fielder on a deep fly ball by Devin Anderson.
The bottom of the fifth proved to be even more productive for the Westfield offense. Chris V got things started with a single to right. Westfield then loaded the bases with walks by Scott Tupper, Ethan Smith and Eric Varakian walked to score our fourth run. Nick Mele had the big blow with a line shot to left center driving in 2 to bringing the score to 7-1.
Mele finished 3 for 3 with 3 doubles and 4 RBIs, Chris "Boots" Boutsikaris was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Brett Robertshaw went 2 for 2 with a double.
Chris Rinaldi came in for the top 6th and retired 3 of 5 batters (2 strikeouts) to close the game for our second win of the season. The game ended on a spectacular play by Boots, who snared a line drive headed for right field for the final out.
Another all around solid defensive performance by our boys. Next up, Madison -- we're away (wearing gray).
